“...beautifully sustained, demonstrating Anderson's skill in casting an enchanting musical spell...with Anderson demonstrating his virtuosity in the closing Presto. This was very, very good.”
~Classical Voice of North Carolina
"Matt Anderson is a major poet of the guitar. He possesses a powerful sound, an astute awareness of line and phrasing, and an extensive palette of color. His performance last night at Macon State College was simply brilliant, and he left his audience in want of more."

As a guitarist and pedagogue, Dr. Matthew Anderson has distinguished himself in the musical world in a number of ways. He is a founding member of the Athens Guitar Duo, and over the past decade his concertizing and teaching have taken him all over the world. He has performed for such distinguished individuals as former president Jimmy Carter and world-renowned guitarist Christopher Parkening; and, as a member of the Athens Guitar Duo, he is currently both a Claudio Records Artist and a Hill Guitar Company Artist. As a competitor, Matthew won First Prize and Convention Recitalist in the 2003 Georgia Music Teachers Association Spring Competition and was a semi-finalist in the 2007 Columbus State University Guitar Symposium International Competition.

Matthew’s performance activities have included solo and duo tours across the United States, several duo tours of Europe as well as a tour of China, a performance of Arvo Pärt’s “Fratres,” and a performance and upcoming recording of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s “Romancero Gitano” for guitar with mixed choir. Matthew’s recording activities have included chamber music, pedagogical recordings, and session work. His most recent recording is the Athens Guitar Duo’s sophomore album, Recuerdos, which was released on the Claudio Records label and distributed internationally by Naxos. As a clinician, Matthew has given masterclasses and presentations throughout the world, and in 2013 he performed and taught at the Grumo Music Festival in Tesero, Italy. He currently serves as the Director of Education and Outreach for the Atlanta Guitar Guild, where he developed an “Artists in Residence” program that places guitarists in middle and high school guitar programs for a day to give concerts and workshops. Equally at home on electric guitar, Matthew has been a major proponent and participant in developing a collegiate guitar pedagogy that focuses on the ability to transition between the techniques and styles of classical, electric, and steel-string acoustic guitars. He is an active performer of works that fall under the “art electric” heading, including Steve Reich’s “Electric Counterpoint” and Eve Beglarian’s “Until it Blazes.”

Matthew began serious guitar studies as a Presidential Scholar with renowned instructor John Sutherland at Georgia State University. He graduated summa cum laude with Distinction from Georgia State University’s School of Music. Matthew chose to continue his studies with John Sutherland at the University of Georgia under the prestigious University-Wide Teaching Assistantship in the areas of guitar and music theory, going on to receive both his masters and doctoral degrees in performance. In addition to studies with Mr. Sutherland, Matthew has performed in masterclasses with Paul O'Dette, Matteo Mela, Simone Fontanelli, Patrick Lui, and Christopher Parkening.

Matthew is Assistant Professor of Guitar at Reinhardt University in Waleska, Georgia, where he also serves as the Co-Director of the Reinhardt Contemporary Arts Festival and Music Program Coordinator. He lives with his wife and two children in north Atlanta.

"The Skylight Gallery Concert Series at Oglethorpe University was recently treated to an exquisite performance by guitarist Matthew Anderson. The small but attentive audience enjoyed Mr. Anderson’s relaxed verbal introductions to the works, then were mesmerized by his beautiful and fluid playing.  His mixed program was just perfect for a Sunday afternoon recital.  We hope he will return to perform again on our series soon!"

~Dr. Brent Runnels

Director, Skylight Gallery Concert Series

"Having known Matt Anderson since his undergraduate days, I am please to say that he has matured into an expressive and competent guitar artist. His playing is clean and articulate, his programming is varied and interesting, and his comments are informative and insightful while avoiding redundancy and verbosity.

His future as a guitar recitalist and instructor is bright and promising."

"Dear Matt:

Thank you for your stellar performance given at LaGrange College. I appreciated your repertoire choices and the ease with which you communicated from the stage with our students about the musical selections. It is always gratifying to host an artist who understands and appreciates how to make a concert an educational as well as aesthetically pleasing experience. You did both superbly.

I also congratulate you for your outstanding musicianship and artistry. Your love for the instrument, attention to detail, lyrical phrasing, and seemingly effortless performance captivated us all. It was obvious from the extended and enthusiastic applause that our students recognized they were in the presence of an accomplished artist.

Many, many thanks for sharing your talent with us."

~Dr. Toni Anderson, Chair
